Review, WI vs NZ, 29 Mar 2007
Whats this! It seems we have done pretty well this time around.
Yesterday's post:
"Winner: New Zealand
Individual Scores:
Gayle: Expect a 50+ score
Chanderpaul: Will make a big hundred if he goes over 15-20 runs.
Sarwan:25-35
Stephen Fleming: Most likely score <20.Will, however, score a 50 if he crosses that.
Styris: 50+"
Lets see what the actual results were like:
Winner: New Zealand
Individual Scores:
Gayle: 44
Chanderpaul: 4
Sarwan:19
Stephen Fleming:45
Styris: 80
There! These people don't seem to like converting 40s to 50s. That would've made us look so much better. But otherwise, the little tweaking we did with the model seemed to have worked.
We'll give ourselves a li'l pat on the back for this one. (We badly need it, with the general interest levels in the team plunging after India's ouster)

WI vs NZ
There's been too much cricket over the last 3 days, with the Aus Vs WI match going into the reserve day. So, with a kind heart, please excuse the delay in today's predictions. We've taken out what little time we could from a scarily busy schedule, and have come out with a few predictions for the match.
Winner: New Zealand
Individual Scores:
Gayle: Expect a 50+ score
Chanderpaul: Will make a big hundred if he goes over 15-20 runs.
Sarwan:25-35
Stephen Fleming: Most likely score <20. Will, however, score a 50 if he crosses that.
Styris: 50+
You'll notice that we keep changing the way we present individual predictions. The plain and simple reason is that we wish to make the best use of the model and tell you everything it has to say. As always, suggestions are welcome.

The Indian debacle and the Australian run mojo
While we haven't posted predictions for the Ind v SL match and the Aus v RSA match (for various reasons), we did send them over to DNA as always. So we'll request you to :
a) take our word for it
OR
b) look up the respective editions of DNA,
when we say that we predicted victory for Sri Lanka (correctly) and South Africa (wrongly).
A score of 40-60 was correctly predicted for Dravid, as was a failure for Sachin and Sourav.
A low score was predicted for Sehwag but he went on to score 48.
Over-all, good predictions, though not necessarily pleasing to the Indian cricket fan (that includes us).
With South Africa we bungled big time and we've started looking into the matter(though their victory seemed possible when they were 165/0). The problem should be sorted out before they play their next match.
We'll come out with predictions for the WI v AUS match tonight. We'll however hope that any delay is excused, since we aren't done yet brooding over India's exit from the tournament.
And yes, we'll all hope (as will you) that Indian cricket gets a much needed revamp as soon as possible.

Oh, woe, India!
Well, what do we say!
We've decided this one's gonna be a graffiti post. Throw in all the criticism/abuses/words-of-encouragement that you have for both us and the Indian team in the comments section of this post and we shall put them up on the blog.
We must admit this much. Predicting a NZ win over AUS was one thing. But India's defeat to Bangladesh was well and truly beyond our 'predictive powers'. And dont even get us started on Pakistan's defeat to Ireland. We cant thank our stars enough for not trying to predict that one.
We'll be back with more venom for the next match and we hope the Indian team does so too.
On that positive note, cya around!

Review, NZ vs ENG, 16th March 2007
So New Zealand did win as predicted! Sure, it might seem obvious to a lot of people now, but consider this: Both teams beat Australia in their recent ODI series and New Zealand lost to Bangladesh in their practice match. Doesn't seem that obvious now does it?
And coming to the scores, we predicted low scores for Ian Bell and Andrew Flintoff, both of which turned out to be true. This, inspite of the fact that Flintoff was tipped to be one of the better performers in the match.
With Mc Millan (NZ), we were really close, predicting 24 when he actually scored 27!
And yes, we love the feedback (read criticism?). It really helps. So do bring it on!

Oh Boy!
Why haven't we posted over the last two days? Well, we've been busy....with the press!
We went to DNA with our predictions before the first world cup match and they gladly obliged.
And now the thing is all over the place! Indiatimes, Hindustan times, The Statesman...you name it. And whats more, our team made a brief appearance on ESPN's Sports Center show on 14th March too!
So what caught the media's attention?
Being bang on for both the captains. Though others weren't quite right. And we predicted a Windies victory too (though they did win comfortably).
Talking business, we will be ready with next set of predictions by this evening.
Here are some of the links which talk about our stuff:

World Cup 2007 West Indies Vs Pakistan
Hi Folks!
The World Cup starts tomorrow! And we are all excited! We have waited for long for this... and so have you. As is our habit of playing Nostradamus, we will be blabbering out our preditions for the world cup too. And hope that they arent just blabberings.
Our predictions for tomorrow's match are:

Our predictions for tomorrow's match are:

We believe it will be a narrow match, with West Indies having a slight edge over Pakistan. Also, if West Indies bats first, we expect it to be a low scoring match.

Introduction
Into cricket? So are we. And when we were bored with being just that, we thought we'll do something cooler. We decided we'll play Nostradamus.
Yup, we claim we can predict who's gonna make how much and you'll see we ain't bluffing. We aren't as good as we would like to be yet, but our excitement got the better of us and we decided to come out with the predictions anyway. This is why you will see that ever-so-helpful 'Beta' tag in the title:D
Goes without saying that we'll keep coming out with more stuff and tune our predictions better.
Go right ahead, then and check out how we fare.
And yeah, that feedback stuff is pretty useful. Keep it coming!

FAQs
We've been getting quite a few queries and suggestions. A few clarifications...
Q. So do you people guess the answers or is there a method to the predictions?
A. There is a method, obviously. Guessing is not as easy as one might think it is.
Q. Where are the predictions for Australia's matches?
A. While building our model and testing it for older matches, we realised the algo rarely works for Australia's batsmen. We believe its because of strong interdependence between their performances. (No idea what that means, but what the hell...).
Q. Why dont you also predict win/loss probability?
A. We are at it as you read. And we think we'll be able to do it soon.
Q. Can you not predict for all players in a team?
A. As mentioned in the introduction, we cant do much with new players, for the simple reason that we have very little data on them.

Review, Ind vs SL 4th ODI, Feb 2007
From the previous post:
"In its current state, it surprisingly predicts a close win for India if it bats first and a comfortable win if it bats second."
Is that a great prediction or what! For the first time yesterday we decided to predict the win/loss chances. And we got it bang on target immediately!
We did a very ordinary job with Sri Lanka's scores this time. We also got all the half century makers wrong. We are pleased we got Sehwag's score and quite a few Lanka batsmen's ranges pretty correct though. The comparision table:

Ind vs SL, 4th ODI, Feb 2007
Our predictions for tomorrow's match:
We think there is a reasonable chance of Dravid coming good (inspite of our prediction) since data shows that he does well in series deciders.
And yes, Sehwag, the wild card of the cricketing world has a 20% chance of scoring a 70+ score.
We are also pleased to inform that our win/loss predictive model is doing great progress and should be out soon. In its current state, it surprisingly predicts a close win for India if it bats first and a comfortable win if it bats second. Our score predictions seem to suggest otherwise. Fingers crossed!

Ind-SL 3rd ODI and Pak-SA final ODI, Feb 2007

We just seem to be getting better and better dont we!
Well ok, a few predictions for SA and SL weren't really close to the true figures, but did you even look at the rest?!
Given the kind of form he is in, who would've thought yousuf would fail? Well we did:D
And ofcourse, there's Mahela's bull's eye prediction!

Dilshan and Ganguly did a lot better than we thought they would. Dravid fared worse, though we did predict he'd fail. Rest of them, close to target!

St George's Park, Port Elizabeth (day/night) : No Result
This was one of our first predictions and it appeared in a different blog. The match was called off owing to rain but we have reproduced it here cos we think it looks kinda nice;)
We avoid making predictions for new kids on the block. Predictions are to be looked at as ranges, even where not specified so. We believe that an error of 10 is pretty acceptable (till we bring it down that is:D).

We were way off with Inzi's score. But barring that, not a bad job is it!
